Tuberous breasts breastfeeding-Breastfeeding and underdeveloped (hypoplastic) breasts | BabyCenter

Mothers who struggle with milk production hear advice like this from well-meaning friends and family members and sometimes, from breastfeeding supporters who should know better. While the vast majority of milk production problems can be remedied by addressing issues of breastfeeding management, there are some for whom making enough milk to sustain their babies is difficult or impossible. Primary lactation failure can be due to a variety of factors, including previous thoracic or breast surgery that severs critical nerves or ductwork; hormonal complications, such as those that accompany polycystic ovarian syndrome or thyroid abnormalities; and a condition in which mammary tissue simply did not develop during adolescence. Lactation failure can be classified into three categories: preglandular, glandular, and postglandular Morton, A preglandular cause for low or no milk production is directly related to hormonal issues such as a retained placenta or postpartum thyroiditis.

I'm 20weeks pregnant with my first and am concerned that I'll have a hard time breast feeding. I have tubular shaped breasts sometimes called hypoplastic or tuburous. This is the only breast shape out there that has been studied and suggested to sometimes lead to low or no milk production-basically the breast tissue that produces milk is underdeveloped resulting in the weird shape.

I've hated my breasts all my life and to think they might not be able to do their job even is really depressing. I really want to be able to feed my LO. Do any of you breast feeding mammas have this too? Any advice for me? Also I have had a very little colostrum leak from my nipples already. Is colostrum a sign that I'll be able to produce milk??

Leaking colostrum is a great sign! You wont be able to assess what kind of supply you will have until the baby is born. There are plenty of options available to you if you want to breastfeed. Find a good Lactation Consultant who is experienced with this and can help assess the supply once the baby is here.

You will need extensive weight checks and follow ups to ensure an adequate milk supply. If your supply is low, you have options as in supplementing partially with formula and if nursing at the breast is important to you, you can purchase a supplementer system that will allow you to supplement formula while breastfeeding at the breast. You may not even need to supplement too so my best suggestion would be to find a lactation consultant asap. That's true and mine is definitely not the extreme case it's pretty mild actually.

I just really want to be able to breastfeed and I guess I'm a little paranoid! I will certainly do all I can to make it work.

Yep I have them and got implants to fix the appearance. I'm also a working mom I worked really hard with the lactation support at my hospital when my son was born. I was always a little low on milk. I tried everything I could think of because giving up was not an option. Oatmeal, gatoraid, extra water, supplements, power pumping, hospital grade pump, baby to breast. I finally used reglan and wow instant milk. I didn't like the side effects and you can't use it long term.

I switched to domperidone and have had great success. We will hit 2 years of nursing in 2 weeks! You might have to work harder, you might need medical help, but if you want it don't give up.

I'm so glad I didn't. My understanding is that it's going to be a hard road, but isn't out of the question. It's also not all-or-nothing situation. You can work your arse off and still be a bit short, so it's ok to supplement.

If you feel strongly about avoiding formula there are groups for direct donation of breastmilk, so you can find a mom in your area with excess milk you can give lo instead of formula. It's actually great because then lo gets that woman's antibodies too! Thank you! It's good to hear that it worked. I'm definitely willing to put on the extra work too. Congrats on 2 years! I have tubular shaped breasts, but I can produce enough milk to feed multiple babies.

With my first I EP'd and produced 70 oz a day. So, just because you have the shape doesn't mean you can't produce milk! If you do find your supply is low, there are herbs and meds you can take to increase your supply. Here is a helpful page about hypoplasia.

The breasts that develop in this way can be identified with the naked eye by asymmetry and shape, because the breast can develop in a conical shape, with a clear scarce breast tissue in the lower part of the breast and areolas exaggeratedly prominent or ringed.

The breast is neither symmetrical nor hemispherical. It is possible to begin to distinguish the alteration of the breast in puberty or already in the process of lactogenesis I, when the breast does not develop normally in gestation. Breasts with these characteristics are related to an inability to produce enough milk to maintain exclusive breastfeeding. This does not mean that milk is not produced, there is always milk, what can happen is that the amount is not enough. If the mother wishes to breastfeed, she can do so with the help of supplements.

There are different surgical interventions such as mammoplasty or mastopexy, which may have modified the appearance of these breasts, which does not mean that they can have improved milk production capacity, simply that they have changed the appearance. In fact, the same intervention can be a cause of hypogalactia, especially in interventions of areolar approach with a complete remodeling, since they can manage to section ducts and nerve endings that alter without a doubt the capacity to maintain milk production.

When we attend a woman with difficulty in maintaining exclusive breastfeeding, we will need, among other things, to revise the breast structure in case there have been previous surgical interventions, it should be remembered that many women have been told that surgery does not compromise their future breastfeeding. It is important to remember that our intervention will depend on the will of the mother, who will be able to choose between trying to offer the breast exclusively during the first few days and assessing continuous evolution, opting for mixed breastfeeding or weaning.
